EMOSIWN

Yukiko Wilson works with shippo (enamel), one of Japan's traditional artisan crafts. She has always been captivated by the delicate effects created by a glass-based medium on metal, as well as the unique allure and unpredictability of working with fire to create art.

Born into a family that ran a traditional handcrafted kimono business, she has long been deeply familiar with the rich heritage of Japanese design, particularly the intricate patterns known as Edo-komon. These designs often incorporate auspicious symbols and continue to exert an almost spiritual influence on Japanese people, remaining an integral part of the artisan tradition. Increasingly, they are also becoming a source of inspiration for contemporary creators, appealing to both national and international audiences. While this design heritage strongly informs her work, she also draws inspiration from the cosmic world, the natural and historic landscapes she encounters, and the ever-changing Scottish countryside of her adopted home.

Yukiko embraces enamelling not only to honour traditional craftsmanship and preserve its skills but also because she values handmade works that convey the warmth of nature and the human touch. She hopes her work will serve as a bridge, connecting the cherished traditions of the past with contemporary audiences.
