Katherine Cowtan, artist
Katherine Cowtan worked for many years as a textile designer for London fashion designers, and also as a fine artist. She now combines both these skills making her own range of unique, contemporary scarves, for which she weaves samples, prototypes and occasionally one-off lengths on her compu-dobby handloom in her home studio. Inspired by the landscapes around her home in rural Stirlingshire, and often using her own artwork as reference, she chooses colours to reflect the changing seasons on the hills, in local woodlands and hedgerows. Her designs are made from the highest quality natural materials like silk and Scottish spun cashmere. Using traditional weaving techniques, her aim is to offer an alternative to traditional wool, tweed and tartan textiles, by creating classic contemporary designs. Her big scarves are soft and snuggly for winter yet lightweight for a summer wrap, and can be worn on special occasions, for everyday wear or as a souvenir of Scotland. They are woven to her specifications in limited editions at a small mill in The Scottish Borders.
